999 call cut off –
police response

In our March edition we reported that a local resident made a 999 call about a serious incident, but was cut off by the operator when he said he preferred not to give his name. We asked Inspector Trevor Bichard to comment.

He told the Messenger he very much regretted that the call was cut off. He explained that 999 calls are initially taken by an agency, which then transfers them to the appropriate service. So it was probably not the police who cut off the call. He was glad that the Messenger had brought the matter to public attention.
“You must complain or nothing will ever change,” he said. “I know it’s difficult, but people should stand up and be counted when they see something has gone wrong.”
We also asked the police to respond to the letter about policing of drug dealing in our March edition, but they declined to do so.
