Dear Messenger,
Gaby Spinks wonders (issue
20) what is the origin of the name “Burnwood”. It is simply to celebrate the presence on Scott Road of the resident who, in direct contravention of the Clean Air Act (1956), burns wood on his open fire. He burns coal, too. The local Authority seems to have no problem with this.
There used to be charcoal burning in Little Roe Wood – but that is outside the 20m.p.h. speed limit area now called Burnwood. In view of the pathetic attempts by some drivers to reach 40 or 50m.p.h. between speed bumps, perhaps the area should be called “Burnrubber”.
Yours sincerely, Vic Gibson
