Shirecliffe homes demolition
by Andrew Green
Sheffield City Council has decided to demolish 114 properties on the Shirecliffe estate. “Consultation will continue with 262 tenants and residents at Shirecliffe who live in close proximity to the 114 properties that the Council proposes to demolish. They will be given the opportunity to help shape the future of the estate, which may include the possibility of further demolition,” the Council adds.
What this means is that many additional properties are under threat of demolition. The Messenger has obtained a map showing which houses the Council wants to take out. These are the houses with views to the south and west across Hillsborough to the Derbyshire hills. The value of these sites is marred only by the landfill just below. If cleared, the sites will be sold to private developers.
The Council says the houses now under threat are unwanted and neglected. North Sheffield Action Group and Shirecliffe Tenants’ and Residents’ Association argue strongly that there is a waiting list of potential tenants, and that it’s the Council who are neglecting the houses. They will continue to fight any decision to demolish.
They’ve joined up with organisations across the city as Sheffield Defend Council Housing. A protest is planned for Wednesday 10 April at 1.30 pm outside City Hall.
