Ethnic Traditional Music Song and Dance

The problems of passing on culture to the next generation are shared by many communities and individuals. While the cultures are different the problems of funding, finding teaching spaces and providing unusual instruments are the same.

In recent months people from a wide range of cultural backgrounds have been coming together to discuss the issue. An open meeting in December at Forum House allowed people to introduce themselves and share their views of passing on traditions, many found this a useful start to the process. Seaton Gosling, Chair of the Black Community Forum, introduced Forum House, a new space available for Arts, and encouraged the development of diverse cultures within a context of co-operation. Support also came from the Irish Traditional Music Society, Burngreave Ethnic Network, The South Riding Folk Network, the citywide dance project, Sharrow Forum, and community education

Any group interested or involved in the passing of traditional music song or
dance is warmly invited to send a representative to the next meeting to be held on 15th February at 6.30pm at 187-191 Verdon Street, Burngreave, S3 9QQ.
