50 Not Out - For a unique Sheffield Institution

The 20th of January 2002 marked a very special occasion for Assocated Chemists (Wicker) Ltd. They had been open every day for 50 years, dispensing over 4.3 million prescriptions.

Previously people relied on the good will of pharmacists for ‘out of hours’ service. In 1952 Len Stocks’ solution came to fruition:
‘a pharmacy financed, instigated and developed by a community of private chemists for the public service’

The idea of ‘associated chemists’ soon took off and by the 60’s separate companies based on the model were open all round the country.
Current Chairman Martin Bennet is proud to be at the helm of a company still leading the way with innovations like the first computer labelling (1978) and the new ‘Medicine on Time’ packaging system.

‘Sheffield owes a debt of gratitude to Len Stocks, few other cities boast a properly organised pharmacy after 7pm.’
