New Chair for Burngreave Area Panel
Hi, my name is Jackie Field. I was elected as your Councillor in May and I am the new Chair of the Burngreave Area Panel.
I am proud to represent Burngreave and The Labour Party on the City Council.
I have lived in Burngreave for the past 22 years and love it – it’s a wonderful place to live!
Priorities for the Year
Although a lot has been done to improve Burngreave over the last few years I feel there’s still a lot to do. Some of my priorities for this year are:
The Vestry Hall
We must get work started on the Vestry Hall and see it back in use as a facility for the whole community of Burngreave. It’s a landmark in the area and has been derelict for far too long. We need some of the New Deal for Communities £50m money to do it up now!
Beautiful Burngreave
I aim to continue the excellent work started by the last Chair, Councillor Ibrar Hussain, and make sure that the streets are kept clean, the weeds removed and rubbish is cleared.
As part of the ‘brightening up’ of the area we are looking into providing hanging baskets on Spital Hill and around the Ellesmere Green area. We are going to plant 1000’s of spring bulbs. This is where we need your help. We need local residents, community groups and schools to choose the sites they think would be good to brighten your area and then help to plant the bulbs in the Autumn. Please let me know if you’d like to be involved.
Hot News!
Burngreave is to be part of a pilot area to clear dumped cars. There will be a 24 hour, 7 days a week, telephone hot line to report dumped vehicles to and they will promise to remove within 24 hours of them being reported.
More information about the new scheme will be out later.
The Carwood Estate – The Carwood meeting room needs to be repaired and put back into use for the whole of that community. The estate desperately needs a place for people to meet and for the building to be improved.
Community Chest – Although the Area Panel hasn’t a lot of money we are setting up a Community Chest for individuals or groups to apply for small amounts of money to improve the area. The total money we have to spend is £3,000 so each grant will only be for projects up to £200. There will be a simple application form to fill in and we will be producing guidelines stating what the money can be spent on and who can apply. More details and the launch of the application form at the July area panel.
Finally I’d like to say, many thanks to those people who voted for me, and to all the people of Burngreave. I look forward to working for and with you to make Burngreave an even better place to live.
CLEARING THE WAY
Burngreave now has its own environment team that is dedicated to looking after your roads and green spaces. The team is a first for Sheffield Council and has been put together by Housing, Streetforce, Environmental Services, New Deal and the Area Panel working together. As I write the team’s base on Spital Lane is being sorted out and whilst this is done you will be able to report street cleaning, dumping, road repairs and ground maintenance work that needs doing to them via the Burngreave Housing Office, 177 Spital Hill tel: 2039348 . They will be telling you more about how they will be working so please look out for more information.
STREETS AHEAD
Your Area Panel wants you to have a greater say in what new road improvements happen in Burngreave. As part of this Sheffield Council has asked your Area Panel to direct £10,000 worth of small road improvements such as new signs, bollards and road markings. In the future we will be asking you to tell us what work you feel needs to take place. Please look out for more information in the Messenger and at your Area Panel meetings.
You can meet your local Area Panel Councillors at their regular surgeries. These are at:
