Nearly there for Sixth Form

by Claire Burnell

Plans for a sixth form college for the north east of Sheffield came two big steps closer to happening since last month’s Messenger. First the Learning and Skills Council Board (the people with the money) gave their commitment to an independent college, now the plan has won official backing from the City Council.

The Council has given the old Firth Park Brushes site free of charge and also access to the playing fields in Longley Park . The college aims to open in 2004. The new centre will offer 16 year olds in north east Sheffield the same breadth of choice as those in the south west.

As one of a group of parents and local people who have campaigned for this - it is brilliant news. Partners in the project include the five local secondary schools, the University of Sheffield, the Sheffield College, the Education Department, the local community and Burngreave New Deal.

This sixth form would not be happening without: the hard work of the Council Education Department; the support of local head teachers; the many young people who backed the campaign and, critically, the support from local people, including all those people who signed last years petition. Thank you.

Now we just have to make sure there is enough community representation on the board and think of a decent name. Present suggestions include “The 21st century sixth form college” – ugh! Or “North East Sheffield Sixth Form College” – boring!….. suggestions welcome.
