Editorial - May 2002
By the Messenger team
The Messenger has had a great deal of money from the New Deal program over the last two years. We have been lucky that our capacity was such that we could work through the complex process and access money.
Now we face a funding gap of several months, staff will be laid off and volunteers expected to maintain the project.
Maintaining staff seems to be a problem affecting groups across Burngreave working to regenerate the area. Temporary contracts and jobs ending at short notice makes working in Burngreave unstable and demanding.
The result is experienced local workers leave employment bitter or exhausted, and look for work outside the area, reducing Burngreave’s capacity to regenerate itself.
Local people and their skills and experiences are a precious resource and need to be treated as such.
The Burngreave Messenger is a community newspaper with editorial independence. We aim to increase and encourage communication in Burngreave.
Each edition is put together by an editorial team who write articles not otherwise credited. The editorial team for each issue is chosen at the monthly management meetings. The next management meeting is on May
15th, 6.30pm , Abbeyfield Park House, all are welcome.
This month’s issue was produced by the Editorial team:
Lisa Swift, Andrew Green, Mark Lankshear, Rob Smith, Shaffaq Mohammed, Ian Clifford, Richard Belbin, Gaby Spinks, Martin Currie Kim Streets and Sam Constance.
Desk Top Publishing: Carl Rose
