Our local Post Office, a vote of thanks
By Gabby Spinks
Pitsmoor Post Office was recently held up by an armed man.
Fortunately no one was hurt and the thief was caught later the same day. This is the fifth hold up that Ian Lant and his staff have had since he started running a local Post Office in 1977, two in the last year. This would be enough to make anyone give up such a dangerous profession, but Ian seems to regard it as an occupational hazard. He has been doing the job for a quarter of a century and it looks like gunmen can’t see him off, or stop his local Post Office from being the cheerful accessible place that it is. But perhaps the Post Office plc can. As they ‘re-invent’ themselves some urban post offices are due to close in the future and five Post Offices in the Burngreave and Pitsmoor area might be merged into one large unit with more automated services. Let’s hope that Ian and his staff survive this latest attack and continue serving the community in the way that they have been doing for so long. I know that I’m grateful to have a friendly local post office where there is always time to say Hello, and I think we all owe them a big thank you.
