Shops and Businesses that feature

By Rob Smith

The Nearly New Shop, 195 Verdon Street

Men’s suits and trousers, ladies skirts and blouses, winter coats and jackets plus shoes of all sizes, all for under two pound at our Nearly New shop prices. Bric-a-Brac, household goods plus babies clothes that won’t cost you loads. A small display of jewellery perfumes and ladies items. “Verdon Street Enterprise Community shop is run for the people by the people,” proclaimed ILM worker Monica Wisdom who was present on my arrival along with Jane Richardson. Jane who has been managing the little shop on behalf of Verdon Street Enterprise has been doing it for just over two years. She explained a little about the community led initiative, “making clothes and other things affordable for those less fortunate or better off than ourselves. Most clothes are second hand as you see,” Jane also explained how keen they are to accept donations from people who have decent and well kept items that they have no further use for and feel could be of use to someone else. The Nearly New Shop is situated at 195 Verdon Street and is open from 10am till 4pm Monday to Friday.

Marmaris Barbers, 42 Firth Park Road, Tel 07789690746

Hair cut and wet shave, the Turkish way. Unknown to me, the name Marmaris is of a famous holiday resort, frequented by many British holidaymakers visiting Turkey. This newly opened shop pictured is aptly named after the resort, by its Turkish proprietor Mustafa Yanbak. “I grew up and learnt all my skills as a young boy in Marmaris,” explains Mustafa smiling. “From my Uncle, I learnt to be a top barber, I do all styles for fathers and for their sons,” he adds with confidence. “I’m an original cut razor barber Rob, but to prevent the spread of infections these days we have disposable blades that we change after every cut. Mustafa explained more. “We have hair cuts from £3.00, beard trimming, face massage, beard styling, turkish wet shave with a hot towel and discounts for children and OAPs. I also do burning of ear, nose and facial hair, helping people to look and feel fresh.” The Marmaris Barbers is open 6 days a week, from 10am to 7pm Mon-Saturday. So next time you’re in need of a good professional Mediterranean shave and groom, then walk no further than the land of Marmaris, 42 Firth Park road next door to Prime Pizza.

Terry's Discount Centre, 20-22 Ellesmere Road, Tel. 2495161

Over 38 years ago, on this same spot, sat Hyman’s furnishers. Terry himself explained how he began in the hardware businesses over twenty years ago and started from a smaller shop situated beside the old TSB Bank. “When Hyman’s moved out over eleven and a half years ago Terry took over the shop,” explained Susan who’s been working here ever since I can remember. “I used to work for Hymans before, see, and have been here over thirty eight years now Rob,” Susan informs me smiling. Inside Terry’s you can buy almost anything and everything except perishable goods. Household items from buckets and spades to quality ex-catalogue toys and furniture part exchanged with free delivery on larger items. For me, Terry and Susan have always been here serving the community we reside in and deserve enough respect and recognition.
