Mind the gap

by Mark Lankshear

The 2nd postal survey of Health and Illness in Sheffield, SHAIPS 2 has been published. It shows that while health overall has got slightly better since SHAIPS 1 in 1994, the gap between affluent and deprived areas has widened. For instance, in 1994 there were four times as many people who had had a stroke in the worst electoral ward than the best, in 2000 it was eight times as many.

The report confirms the rise in coughing in Burngreave we reported in November last year, and also shows that while Burngreave has the 9th highest level of depression in the city, we are 21st when it comes to access to mental health workers.
